    Mixed apnea is a combination of both central and obstructive apnea. It must be at least 10 seconds in duration. Its most common form is when there is no breathing effort, followed by a gradual resumption of breathing. In other words, the brain literally stops telling the respiratory muscles to do their job, and then the brain slowly begins sending the signal to breathe again.
