In general, metoprolol-hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) in combination is not known to interact with foods. Drinking alcohol while taking metoprolol-HCTZ may increase its side effects. This medication may increase the risk of dehydration, especially during exertion or hot weather. This combination medication interacts with a large variety of other medications, so it is very important to tell the doctor and pharmacist about all of the prescription and over-the-counter medications, supplements and herbal remedies. In particular, the doctor needs to know about antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-malaria medications, colestipol, cholestyramine, diabetes medications, any other heart or blood pressure medications, HIV/AIDS medications, any medications to treat psychiatric disorders, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as aspirin and ibuprofen, steroids or theophylline.
