Schizophrenia does affect males differently than females in some ways, although the symptoms are usually similar between the sexes. One way that males are affected differently by the disease is that males with schizophrenia are more likely to commit suicide than females. However, this may not be caused by schizophrenia, because males in the general population are also more likely to commit suicide than women. Another difference between the sexes in regard to schizophrenia is the age at which the symptoms first appear. Males are usually affected earlier, with schizophrenia symptoms usually starting around age 18. Females usually do not have symptoms of schizophrenia until they reach their 20s or 30s, with the average age of onset at age 25.
