How do medications treat epidemic conjunctivitis pink eye?
-
Corticosteroid eye drops may be prescribed by your doctor to provide some relief from inflammation in some people with epidemic conjunctivitis pink eye. If your doctor determines that the cause of your infection is related to a condition such as herpes, they may prescribe antiviral medication. Antibacterial creams may also be prescribed to prevent a bacterial infection from developing. The viral infection usually heals by itself over time.

Dr. David Demartini answered:Most pink eye is a viral conjuntivitis which is not responsive to common antibiotics designed for bacterial conjnunctivitis. Hence most pink eye will get better as the body clears the virus just as it does for the common cold. However many ophthalmologists will treat viral pink eye with topical antibiotics to cover the possibility of a bacterial overgrowth during the acute stages of viral conjunctivitis. Topical steroids, because they shut down the body's healing response to the virus, are usually reserved for patients that have extreme symptoms and decreased vision as they tend to prolong the duration of the pink eye. Most patients would rather deal with the usual mild symptoms of viral pink than have it persist for weeks, months or longer!
