Is medical literature available for family members of those in ICU?

Dr. David Fiore answered:There are many resources available for information about critical care and associated medical conditions. The best place to start is with the doctors, nurses, social workers and other health care providers taking care of your family member. The internet has many websites devoted to medical conditions, but you might want to preview the website with a health care provider first, to make sure the information is accurate. The National Library of Medicine maintains a patient and family oriented website (Medline Plus) that has valuable information on many topics. Its site on critical care medicine can be found at: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/criticalcare.html.

Kelly Arashin of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Many medical conditions have patient and family education materials available. Nurses in the critical care unit can provide you and your loved one with this information. Providing patients and family with accurate information regarding the disease process they are being treated for is a very important way for promoting understanding. Some ICUs may even have videos available for viewing regarding various procedures such as heart surgery and cardiac catheterization. The internet may provide some helpful information as well, but be discriminating in where you obtain the information. Large medical centers or national medical libraries are reputable resources; steer clear from sites such as Wikipedia.
