Research suggests that women with poor oral hygiene can develop periodontal disease. Periodontal disease has been linked to increased risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, strokes, cancer, and osteoporosis. To reduce these risks, women can do the following:

    •Stop smoking

•Eat a balanced diet with enough calcium, vitamin D, vitamin C, and other nutrients

    •Exercise and lose weight

•Practice excellent oral hygiene, including brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and visiting the dentist at least twice a year.
