The first step to take before undergoing any whitening procedure is to consult your dentist to determine the most appropriate treatment. A thorough oral examination by a dentist is essential to determine if bleaching is an appropriate course of treatment. This is especially important for patients with many fillings, crowns, and extremely dark stains on their teeth.

Several whitening toothpastes and tooth whitening bleaches that are available over-the-counter have received the ADA Seal of Acceptance, which means they have been thoroughly tested for safety and effectiveness.

If you are planning to use OTC tooth whiteners, you should tell your dentist. Also let your dentist know about any medication you are taking and any medical conditions you may have. OTC tooth whiteners may interact with different medical conditions, medications, and foods. Discuss with your dentist the proper way to use OTC tooth whiteners and possible complications.

While teeth whitening is a safe procedure, it is important to let your dentist know you're considering using these products. There are many safe and cost effective ways to whiten teeth -- from professional teeth whitening performed by your dentist to over-the-counter (OTC) teeth whitening gels and kits to toothpastes that whiten teeth. Although teeth whitening is safe, some formulas are stronger than others. Your dentist is the best person to guide you in selecting the right teeth whitening method for your needs, particularly if you have crowns, bridges, or braces.

Definitely let your dentist know if you are using over the counter whitening. For example, if you had sensitivity from the OTC whiteners that would be important to know if you decided to have professional whitening done in the office. There are ways to deal with sensitivity and we would want to know ahead of time. Also, the bleaching agents can affect the ability of your tooth to bond to resin/ composite/ tooth colored fillings. Ideally, you would want to cease using any bleaching product for 3 weeks prior to having a bonding procedure.
