Building awareness helps you become more mindful of what you are eating and can make you think twice about what you want to eat before you eat it.

Research shows that people who are successful at maintaining their weight losses developed the habit of regularly monitoring what they ate, which helped build awareness of what they were eating.

When you eat with awareness, you notice how food affects you. For example, soon after you eat a rich, fatty meal, you may notice how tired and sluggish you feel. Your mind is not quite as sharp. On the other hand, low-fat foods make you feel light, energetic, and clear thinking. When you begin to associate what you eat with how you feel, then it becomes easier to make more healthful choices. You begin acting out of your own experiences, not someone else’s, and that is the best teacher and motivator.

Eating with awareness will help you enjoy the flavor of foods, and it should allow you to eat less. Many times people eat because of their emotions. Life is full of stress. Many people use food as a way to cope, to forget, or to reward themselves. Food doesn't solve problems. Too much food will add excess pounds. Be aware of every bite. Learn to stop eating, when you feel just satisfied, not stuffed.

It's easy to get into the habit of eating on the run, eating just to fill up, and eating for entertainment. It's important, however, to remember the real reason for eating and become mindful about the foods that we put into our bodies.

The real reason for eating is to re-fuel our bodies, both for energy and for sustenance.

If we are trying to re-energize our bodies, then eating on the run is the wrong approach. Taking the time to think out a healthy meal, put it together and eat it will give you the where-with-all to take specific action throughout the day, keep you alert and allow you to be more efficient with your time, and more than make up for the few minutes saved by just grabbing a snack and eating it in the car on your way to work.
