Dr. Irene Semenov of NorthShore University HealthSystem answered:Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, which is one of the common benign idiopathic generalized epilepsy syndromes, may involve myoclonic and generalized tonic-clonic seizure types. The former is present in 100% of patients and may be the only type of seizure in a small percentage of patients, while the latter occurs in 90% of patients. Both seizure types occur shortly after awakening. Absence seizures could also occur, but less frequently (35% of patients) and consist of a staring spell accompanied by the loss of awareness.
Juvenile absence epilepsy may include both generalized tonic-clonic seizures in addition to absence seizures.
Lennox-Gastaut syndrome includes tonic, atonic and atypical absence seizures. In addition myoclonic, generalized tonic-clonic and partial seizures may be present. Mental retardation is a characteristic feature.
