Many couples gradually grow apart and have to reconnect. Why? A woman marries a man because she appreciates his potential and then tries to adjust him to fulfill this potential. Conversely, a man marries a woman who is exactly what he wants, and then she goes off and changes. So in effect as soon as you fall in love, both of you start racing in different directions. Thankfully for you and any offspring, you are held together by chemical handcuffs like dopamine and oxytocin. But as their levels wane and the cuffs slip off after five to seven years, you need to continually reinvent the marriage. People who have been married for 30 years have really had four marriages. And it's also important to take these ideas to our partners.
And sometimes, we think that relationships are made or broken on the grand gestures, the big fights, the four-foot-teddy bears won at the carnival. But we could strengthen our relationships immensely with more attention to the details - -giving each other compliments, scheduling dates nights - (which can help keep the big problems from surfacing).

There are many little things that can be done to improve a relationship that really add up over time. Some of these are daily expressions of love, affectionate touches, and verbal expressions of affection and gratitude. Another is to express interest in the other person`s job, family and activities. True listening is one of the best gifts you can give. Bringing fun and humor into situations can help improve a relationship. Bringing variety in the form of new activities, taking a class together and establishing a date night where each person alternates the plan for the evening are good ideas. One of the best ways to know how to improve your relationship is to ask your partner what you can do better, and take notes without getting defensive.
