One of the largest and most preventable causes of joint destruction and ligament tears is misalignment (it happens more in women, who generally have wider hips). If your bones and joints are slightly misaligned, which is common in people who walk bow-legged, or if you had a leg bone fracture that was displaced, or if you don't have the same range of motion in a joint as you think typical, see someone who specializes in this area. In the meantime, you can get some insight into your biomechanics by looking at the wear pattern of your running/walking shoes. You should see two wear patterns on the bottom of the shoe - where the heel strikes and where the forefoot (front of the foot) falls. At the forefoot, if the wear is to the extreme inside, it means you're a pronator (your roll your foot in too much). If it's to the extreme outside, it means you're a supinator (you don't roll in enough). Running shoes are constructed to compensate for and correct some of the biomechanical issues.
