    Thyroid is a gland, but it's also a hormone produced by the body. When your body doesn't produce thyroid in the right amounts, you can develop hypothyroidism, in which the body's thyroid hormone level is too low, or hyperthyroidism, in which the body's thyroid hormone level is too high.
