Depending on the cause of your ED, your doctor can recommend a variety of treatments including:

    • Lifestyle changes. Doctors recommend quitting smoking, drinking less alcohol, losing weight and exercising more.
    • Changing medications. Some antihistamines, antidepressants, drugs to lower high blood pressure, and histamine H2 agonists used to treat and prevent heartburn and ulcers can all cause ED. Some street drugs can also cause ED.
    • Drug therapy. Drugs for ED can be taken orally, or injected into the penis or inserted into the urethra at the tip of the penis.
    • Vacuum devices (penis pumps). These devices create a partial vacuum that draws blood into penis to cause an erection.
    • Surgery. Doctors can surgically implant a device into the penis that helps it become erect. Other procedures repair or replace damaged blood vessels in the penis to increase blood flow needed for an erection, or tie off a leaky blood vessel in the penis.
Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is the most prescribed drug for treating ED. Since the FDA approved Viagra to treat ED in 1998, it has been prescribed for over 20 million men.
