The generic version of Prevacid is lansoprazole. Lansoprazole belongs to a class of drugs called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs. PPIs block the action of the tiny pumps in your stomach that produce acid, reducing the amount of acid in your stomach and lowering your risk for heartburn.

Lansoprazole is available in prescription and nonprescription forms. If you experience heartburn more than twice a week, your doctor may recommend that you take over-the-counter delayed-release lansoprazole capsules, which are available in a 15-milligram dose, equivalent to the medicine found in Prevacid 24. Taking one pill can prevent heartburn for up to 24 hours. Typically, you take lansoprazole once a day for 14 days, and heartburn symptoms improve within one to four days.

Talk to your doctor for more information about lansoprazole and ways to prevent and treat heartburn.
