When a healthy adult gets infected with listeriosis, it often goes away without treatment. If the infection is more serious and requires treatment, antibiotics usually serve as an effective cure. These are typically given intravenously at a hospital. For people who suffer from more serious complications like meningitis, curing the condition is still possible but more difficult. If a newborn gets infected with listeriosis from their mother before birth, even after they're cured of the infection, they may suffer from long-lasting neurological problems.
