Is there a cure for celiac disease?
-
There is not a cure for celiac disease but it can be managed through dietary restrictions. Eating a gluten-free diet can successfully treat celiac disease. Gluten is a protein that is found in barley, wheat and rye, if you are affected with celiac disease your body views gluten as an invader and your immune system attacks it with antibodies. The attack causes damage to the villi that line the small intestine and affect the villi's ability to absorb nutrients from food into your blood. By removing the gluten from your diet you allow your small intestine to repair the villi, which will make it possible for you to receive nourishment from the food you eat.

Dr. Basil Al-Awabdy of Atlanta Gastroenterology Associates answered:Celiac sprue (commonly called celiac disease) is a medical term that describes a condition found in individuals with an allergy or sensitivity to gluten – a dietary protein found in wheat, barley and rye. There is no cure. The only way to prevent the allergic reaction is to follow a gluten-free diet. This has become much easier with gluten-free meals now present at most grocery stores and many restaurants. The good news, though, is that the small intestine can heal itself and resume normal absorption of nutrients within a few months of changing and closely monitoring what you eat. It is important to have regular checkups with your doctor so that he or she can monitor your nutrition and overall health.
