When doctors are able to monitor the condition in order to prevent complications, sickle-hemoglobin C (Hb S-C) disease is not serious. However, the complications that arise can be potentially life threatening. Individuals with the disorder can experience hemorrhages in the eye, which cause a person to go blind, "bone death" due to the low supply of oxygen to the bone, and even death due to stroke and acute chest syndrome, which is characterized by pain in the chest, fever, and difficulty breathing.
