Some babies may have sore or tender gums when teeth begin to erupt. Gently rubbing your child’s gum with a clean finger, a small, cool spoon or a wet gauze pad can be soothing. A clean teething ring for your child to chew on may also help. Your dentist or pediatrician may recommend a pacifier, teething ring or a special “numbing” salve for the gums.
As their teeth erupt, some babies may become fussy, sleepless and irritable, lose their appetite or drool more than usual. Diarrhea, rashes and a fever are not normal for a teething baby. If your infant has a fever or diarrhea while teething or continues to be cranky and uncomfortable, call your physician. Some babies may have sore or tender gums when teeth begin to erupt. Hyland’s Teething Tablets is a huge popular favorite among my clients. It’s like a generic formula that works for babies with a wide variety of teething symptoms.
Some of my clients who know the benefits of finding a specific single remedy that matches their baby like to use remedies like
- Chamomilla, the top remedy for a baby who is absolutely screaming with pain, cranky and inconsolable
- Pulsatilla for babies and small children who tend to be more mild-tempered – they get a little whiny and fussy and want to bury their head in their mom’s lap. They want attention and consolation, which tends to make them better quickly, because their moods are quickly changeable. If this remedy matches a child’s personality, it’s the best teething remedy for that child, because it can also support the child through the normal emotional and behavioral stages of growth and development.
- Calc. phos. can be used along with any specific remedy because it helps provide the minerals that baby teeth (and bones) need in order to grow. It teaches the body how to assimilate minerals more effectively from the diet. It’s already included in Hyland’s Teething Tablets, along with Chamomilla and several other teething remedies.
Directions: For Hyland’s Teething Tablets, follow the package directions. If Chamomilla or Pulsatilla clearly matches your child, you can get the 30c strength (potency) of Symphytum in any health food store or online. Dissolve a pellet in a little water (you may need to crush it or let it soak overnight to dissolve it) then dab a little on the baby’s lips or gums.
For Calc phos, be sure to get the 6x potency or strength. This means it is a tissue salt or cell salt. It’s like a nutritional supplement prepared with a gentle homeopathic process to make it easier to absorb (because minerals like calcium are hard for the body to absorb). The tablets are tiny, dissolve easily, and taste sweet.
For all but the smallest children, you can give them a tablet to suck on twice a day. Use your own judgement – for babies who might choke on a tablet, dissolve it in a little water and dab on the lips as above.
