Is it possible to sleep too much?

Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:Children, teens, and pregnant women need more sleep than adults do. Once we've stopped growing (or delivered the baby), we need about eight hours each night for optimal health.
Think of sleeping too much as a big warning sign. You could be coming down with a cold or developing an illness, you may need better sleep quality, perhaps you're sleep walking, have a nutritional imbalance, or are depressed.Helpful? 1 person found this helpfulChildren, teens, and pregnant women need more sleep than adults do. Dr. Thomas Freedom of NorthShore University HealthSystem answered:Yes, at least too much time in bed is probably not conducive to good quality sleep. However, it is also possible that someone could have an underlying sleep disorder such as sleep apnea that could be compromising the quality of sleep. In that case, regardless of how much sleep someone has he may not feel rested when he awakens. The other possibility is that some people are sleepy regardless of how much sleep they get or require more sleep than the average person. It is possible that 10 hours may not be enough sleep for somebody with one of those conditions. You may want to discuss this with your family doctor or a sleep specialist.
