Is polyhydramnios serious?

Polyhydramnios often requires only additional monitoring from health care professionals. It can increase the risk of stillbirth. If the condition is particularly extreme - i.e., if there is an extremely large volume of amniotic fluid - polyhydramnios can be serious because of the risks associated with direct treatment. Polyhydramnios also raises the possibility that there may be genetic problems with the fetus.

Dr. Deborah Raines of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Polyhydramnios is often a sign of another problem such as a GI tract disorder in the fetus, maternal diabetes or a genetic condition. Polyhydramnios also causes over distention of the uterus which can trigger preterm labor.
