  1. Polyhydramnios often requires only additional monitoring from health care professionals. It can increase the risk of stillbirth. If the condition is particularly extreme - i.e., if there is an extremely large volume of amniotic fluid - polyhydramnios can be serious because of the risks associated with direct treatment. Polyhydramnios also raises the possibility that there may be genetic problems with the fetus.

    Polyhydramnios is often a sign of another problem such as a GI tract disorder in the fetus, maternal diabetes or a genetic condition. Polyhydramnios also causes over distention of the uterus which can trigger preterm labor.
