Is placental abruption serious?
-
Placental abruption is very serious and should be treated immediately if you have any symptoms. When the placental abruption occurs you may have vaginal bleeding, stomach and back pain, and contractions. The baby can also be affected by placental abruption because it interferes with oxygen delivery. During placental abruption, it is possible that both mother and child can die from bleeding and shock.

Dr. Deborah Raines of Honor Society of Nursing (STTI) answered:Yes! A placental abruption is the separation of the placenta from the uterine wall prior to the birth of the baby. Once the placenta separates all oxygen and nutrient supplies to the fetus immediately stop. Without oxygen from the placenta the fetus dies. Thus a placenta abruption is serious and requires immediate intervention in an attempt to save the fetus.
