Pharyngitis is a term that refers to sore throats whether they are caused by a viral throat infection, bacteria or some other form of irritation. Pharyngitis is often a symptom of another illness like a cold or influenza. A viral throat infection is one of the most common causes of pharyngitis and, therefore, cannot be treated with antibiotics. Pharyngitis is treated with antibiotics if caused by bacteria as in strep throat.
