Dr. Stuart Linder answered:There are 2 forms of lasers used for fat removal: 1) Zerona (external) 2) laser assisted liposuction (internal). Zerona is applied externally emulsifies the fat and collapses the adipose tissue reducing the volume. Multiple sessions are required to remove significant amounts of fat. Each session last about an hour with a low level laser used for 40 minutes. At least 2 weeks required between sessions. According to Zerona, the fatty material is emulsified by the formation of a transitory pore in the membrane of the fat cell. The laser is a cold laser method usually is quite painless. The internal laser assisted liposuction technique is controversial. The laser liquefies the fat before its removal and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. Serious complications can include seroma formation and burns to the skin. Whether there is a significant increase in the tightening of the skin is still a debatable issue.
