Hyperkalemia is a serious, life-threatening condition that occurs when the levels of potassium in the blood go too high. Individuals with this disorder are at high risk for cardiac arrest and are usually hospitalized and closely monitored. In individuals who are hospitalized, hyperkalemia occurs in 1 to 10 percent of the cases with a mortality rate of 1 in 1,000.
