  1. Glaucoma is a serious eye disease because no matter what type you may have, over time it will result in a gradual loss of eyesight. Glaucoma is not life threatening, but it is life changing. Some types of glaucoma, such as acute angle-closure, can cause sudden loss of vision. Lack of treatment for any type of glaucoma may lead to total blindness.

    Glaucoma is defined as the decreases in vision that is caused by decreases in the pressure of the eye due to different levels of fluid, which helps maintain the health and structure of the eye. Glaucoma affects vision, as it causes a loss in peripheral vision which leads to tunnel vision, loss of vision and even blindness.

    Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States, the leading cause among African Americans, and a major source of vision problems in the elderly. Over the course of 20 years, three-fourths of those with glaucoma may become blind. Little information is available, however, about the natural course of the disease if you have mild visual defects that are revealed by routine screening tests.
