Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease that causes the gums to become red and swollen and to bleed easily. There is usually little or no discomfort and it can be reversed with treatment in the dental office and good oral care at home. If left untreated, gingivitis may lead to more serious, destructive forms of periodontal disease. The best way to prevent gingivitis is by brushing and cleaning between your teeth every day. By taking care of your teeth, eating a balanced diet and visiting your dentist regularly, you can have healthy teeth and an attractive smile your entire life.

Persistent symptoms of gingivitis should be  a call to action because if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, a much more serious and destructive form of gum disease. Periodontitis can result in tooth loss. It may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, and ay be associated with an increased risk of pre-term birth in pregnant women.

Yes, gingivitis is serious because it means a part of your body is inflamed. From an oral health perspective, untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease which can lead to tooth loss. From a general health view, emerging data is finding that inflammation is a root cause of many systemic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, or Alzheimer's disease to name a few. If you think you have gingivitis, it’s always important to consult with your dental hygienist and dentist.
