  1. Unfortunately, the only reliable cure for dilated cardiomyopathy is a heart transplant. However, this is a complicated and risky procedure, and it is usually reserved for individuals with very severe disease despite optimal treatment with medications. Dilated cardiomyopathy is currently the most common justification for performing heart transplant surgery. Treatment of the underlying cause may cure or greatly improve the cardiomyopathy in some instances, such as dilated cardiomyopathy associated with thyroid disease.
