Coronary heart disease is serious and chronic; once you develop the disease, you will always have it. It is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. Coronary heart disease can develop slowly over decades as plaque builds up and hardens your arteries. In some cases, the first symptom is a heart attack. About every 34 seconds, an American suffers a heart attack. While coronary heart disease is serious, you can greatly reduce your risk by leading a healthy lifestyle, not smoking, exercising, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. Nassir Azimi answered:Coronary heart disease can be serious. However, with modern understanding it can be managed.
Drugs like Aspirin can reduce heart attack. Additionally drugs like Plavix have been shown to decrease this further. Statin medications can reduce risk for rupture of the plaque which is the precursor step for a sudden heart attack. Additional medications like angiotensive converting enzyme inhibitors can reduce rate of plaque progression. Ranolazine and nitrates can reduce symptoms.
Invasive procedures can diagnose the obstruction and often can lead to angioplasty and stenting to relieve any symptoms. Coronary artery bypass surgery can also be performed to improve symptoms and prolong survival.
In essence, coronary heart disease is serious when unrecognized and not addressed. Once identified and under treatment, the risks are reduced.
