Cirrhosis of the liver is when scar tissue forms and damage to the organ, enough to prevent it from functioning correctly. The severity of the disease increases with the amount of scar tissue that has formed. Cirrhosis has many possible causes, including excessive consumption of alcohol, some hepatitis viruses, some diseases that cause liver damage, some toxins, infections, and obesity. If steps are not taken, it can be fatal.
