Dr. Stuart Linder answered:Breast cancer can be serious; however, the majority of cases are curable if diagnosed early on. Statistics indicate 20% of patients who have breast cancer will succumb from their disease. Approximately 1 out of 8 women will develop a form of breast cancer and, therefore, diagnostic screening, including mammogram, ultrasounds, MRIs, and biopsies of palpable nodes, nodules, or masses should be performed.

Bigger tumors are more serious than smaller ones, cancer that has invaded the lymph nodes is more serious than cancer that has not, and breast cancer that does not have the estrogen receptor (ER negative) is more serious than breast cancer with the estrogen receptor (ER positive.)
