  1. Binge-eating disorder is a serious condition that can cause great harm to a person's mental and physical well-being. Individuals rarely derive pleasure from a bingeing session. Low self-esteem, depression, and poor body image are closely associated with binge-eating disorder. These negative feelings are often exacerbated by the guilt and disgust that follow a bingeing episode, which may in turn lead to further binges and establish a vicious and destructive cycle.

Regular bingeing can cause people with this eating disorder to gain large amounts of weight. Most individuals with binge-eating disorder are overweight or obese, and this makes them vulnerable to the very serious complications associated with excess weight, including certain cancers, heart disease, and diabetes.

Successful treatment of binge eating is an integrative approach that looks at deeper issues and adds a spiritual context.

    Dr. Vicki Berkus answered:

Yes, besides the obvious concern for weight gain, people loss the ability to experience "hunger or fullness". Patients describe a mental "zoning" which occurs when they binge-which can affect work and relationships. The choice of binge foods can lead to a sharp rise in blood sugar and then a rapid fall which can cause confusion, lightheadedness. The rise in cholesterol and the bad (LDL) type of lipid can increase risk of heart disease. Patients experience bloating, stomach pain, gas pain and changes in bowel habits. People will frequently isolate to binge in private. The energy and time involved in planning and thinking about binges can take away from their ability to live their life!
