Preliminary studies have found cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a therapy designed to correct patterns of negative thoughts or behavior, effective for older people with panic disorder and social phobia, and it may also help ease generalized anxiety disorder. However, studies have noted that CBT is less effective at relieving anxiety in older adults than it is in younger people. For older people who can't tolerate anti-anxiety medications, CBT can be used by itself.
