    Dr. John Lipman answered:
It can be. Depending on where the fibroids are located will determine what if any symptoms the woman may experience. Fibroids located centrally in the uterus can displace the lining causing heavy menstrual flow. Those that are in the anterior part of the uterus can compress the bladder causing increased urinary frequency and nocturia (waking up at night to urinate). Those fibroids that are located posteriorly or laterally can press on pelvic nerves to cause pelvic pain which can radiate in to the hip, buttock, or back on the same side as the fibroid and radiate down that same leg.
