Is atrial fibrillation serious?
-
Atrial fibrillation isn't usually considered a life-threatening condition, but it is serious enough to be a medical emergency. Minor symptoms of atrial fibrillation such as weakness or noticeably rapid, irregular heart beat may not require a rush to the ER, but chest pains can signal heart failure, which is one of the complications that can result from atrial fibrillation. Another serious complication of atrial fibrillation is stroke. You should seek medical treatment for your atrial fibrillation.

Joan Haizlip answered:Atrial fibrillation (A Fib) can be serious because it can lead to other serious problems. When you have atrial fibrillation, your heart may not be able to pump well. So a small amount of blood may pool in your heart and form a clot. If one of these clots then gets pumped out into the bloodstream, it can travel into an artery in the brain. If it blocks that artery, you will have a stroke.

Dr. Douglas Severance answered:While atrial fibrillation is a serious condition, most people with this condition lead normal, active lives. For some, treatment can cure atrial fib and restore normal heart rhythms. Because of the increased risk of blood clots with this condition, however, there is a greater risk of stroke. Getting anti-coagulant treatment early for atrial fibrillation is important to prevent blood clots and stroke. If atrial fibrillation is persistent, medications may be needed. If atrial fibrillation is permanent, no treatment can bring back a normal heart rhythm.
