Ankyloglossia (tongue-tie) can become a serious condition if left untreated for too long. Infants will often have difficulty breastfeeding, leading to slow weight gain and possibly more health problems. If a child gets older and has difficulty moving his or her tongue, speech development issues may arise. Finally, if a child grows up with the condition, self-esteem problems may develop. At this point, a physical condition takes on a more emotional role in the affected child's life, elevating the seriousness.

In other cases, there can be problems with feeding. In addition, there can be concerns with pronunciation of words because the tongue does not move freely.
