If your doctor describes your hernia as complicated, then that means the hernia has developed a complication. Complications can range from small bowel obstruction, reoccurrence, and incarceration to strangulation. Some complicated hernias are the result of an organ other than the intestine bulging through the abdominal wall. The appendix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, stomach, spleen, or Meckel's diverticulum may be inside the hernia sac. Recurrent hernias often due to the scar tissue around the incision point thinning and growing weak.

Complicated hernias usually require more time to repair, have a higher risk of recurrence, and probably a slightly higher risk of complications from surgery.
