Do ingrown nails affect children differently than adults?
-
Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:Ingrown toenails are a common ailment for both children and adults and affect them in the same way. An ingrown toenail occurs when the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing swelling, discomfort, redness, and possibly discharge (pus). Kids may be susceptible to ingrown toenails if they play a sport that involves frequent kicking (the impact and pressure can cause an ingrown toenail) or if their toenails are not cut straight across. Tapered nail edges can lead to ingrown toenails, as can wearing too-tight shoes. Early treatment of an ingrown toenail is important to keep infection from setting in or spreading. If you suspect your child has an ingrown toenail, have a doctor or dermatologist confirm the diagnosis and suggest treatment.Ingrown toenails are a common ailment for both children and adults and affect them in the same way. Ingrown nails do not affect children differently than adults. If your child is experiencing discomfort, redness, swelling, or all three around one of their nail beds they may have an ingrown nail. You can help prevent ingrown nails in your children by making sure their nails are not trimmed too short or in a curved fashion. Also, be sure to check that their footwear is comfortable and does not pinch their toes.
