    Dr. Mehmet Oz answered:
Sleep supplies the brain with energy; it also helps the brain grow and assists with wiring the circuitry for learning. Along with proper nutrition, it is the most important thing that a child needs for her development. Poor sleep (or "junk sleep," as some sleep experts call it, equating it to junk food) can impair brain development and is sometimes to blame for poor performance, inattention, bad moods, exhaustion, behavior issues, even obesity. (A child's mood can be a barometer of whether or not he's getting sufficient sleep. If your child is generally happy, then he's probably getting enough.)

When you're growing, your brain pumps out growth hormone while you sleep. Getting at least 9 hours of sleep each night helps make sure your child's body has enough time to make a good amount of growth hormone.

Making sure children get enough sleep is one of the basic components of a good health plan. When you’re well rested, you’re so much more productive and aware. Sleeping disorders throw the body out of balance and disrupt sensitive systems, which can affect mood, performance in school, and a host of other things.
