Every patient is unique, but in general, impacted teeth may need to be removed when there is evidence of changes in the mouth such as:
    • pain
    • infection
    • cysts
    • tumors
    • damage or crowding to adjacent teeth, which can cause the other teeth to become crooked
    • gum disease
    • tooth decay (if it is not possible or desirable to restore the tooth)

Your dentist or specialist may also recommend removal to prevent problems or for others reasons, such as when removal is part of an orthodontic, restorative or periodontal treatment plan. Not all impacted teeth have to be removed- it depends on your unique situation.

Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:
Impacted teeth are ones that cannot come through the gum because of overcrowding. Since wisdom teeth are the last to erupt they are most likely to become impacted. Unless removed, impacted teeth can develop infections.

Not all impacted teeth need to be extracted, but some do. If the impacted tooth is causing pain, infection, swelling, is damaging or might cause damage to adjacent teeth, these are all good reasons to have an impacted tooth extracted.
