Does hydrocephalus affect children differently than adults?

Hydrocephalus is more commonly seen in infants and children than it is in adults. Two out of every 1,000 infants born in the U.S. have hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus may result from some common birth defects, including myelomeningocele, the most common form of spina bifida. In children hydrocephalus can cause an increase in the size of the head and delays in development.
