How is a urinary tract infection (UTI) treated?
-
UTIs are treated with antibiotics (an-tuh-beye-OT-iks), medicines that kill the bacteria that cause the infection. Your doctor will tell you how long you need to take the medicine. Make sure you take all of your medicine, even if you feel better! Many women feel better in one or two days.
If you don't take medicine for a UTI, the UTI can hurt other parts of your body. Also, if you're pregnant and have signs of a UTI, see your doctor right away. A UTI could cause problems in your pregnancy, such as having your baby too early or getting high blood pressure. Also, UTIs in pregnant women are more likely to travel to the kidneys.

Dr. Kevin Windom answered:Most commonly urinary tract infections are treated with antibiotics, but there are patients who get good relief by using over-the-counter medication such as Pyridium or Uristat, which are bladder antiseptics and can help cleanse the bladder. Some patients are also able to use cranberry juice or significant amounts of fluid to help flush out their bladder and relieve symptoms of urinary tract infections. If your symptoms do not go away after a few days of over the counter medicines or bladder flushing with water then you should seek medical attention.

Dr. Robin Miller answered:A urinary tract infection is treated with antibiotics. In the past, an infection would be treated for ten days. More recently, the recommendations for a simple urinary tract infection are for treatment for three to five days depending on the antibiotic. There is a newer treatment that is a one-dose therapy but it is a bit pricey.
