A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection in any part of the urinary tract (kidneys, bladder, and urethra). The urethra is the hole where urine comes out. Women get UTIs when bacteria near the anus are rubbed into the urethra, especially if diaphragms or sponges are used
for contraception. Men can get UTIs if the penis rubs or enters the anus.

Women have a short urethra so that it is easy for bacteria to track right on up and cause an infection. Bacteria get near the urethra when they are introduced by sexual activity through intercourse where the bacteria are actually massaged into the urethra.

If women empty their bladder after sexual activity, it is less likely that they will develop a urinary tract infection.
