Here's how to go up and down stairs while using crutches:

    To go up stairs:
    • Using the crutches to bear weight, step up with your good foot onto the step above you.
    • Once you have reestablished balance, bring your crutches up to you.
    • Repeat the process.
    To go down stairs:
    • Place the crutches on the step below you.
    • Without leaning too far forward, transfer your weight to the crutches and use your good leg to step down.
    • Repeat this process, making sure that the crutches are always on the lower step before you try to step down.
