Dr. Allan Stewart of Columbia University Department of Surgery answered:

Type A dissection is an emergency that requires rapid diagnosis and surgical intervention.

An Aortic Surgery Center provides immediate triage, direct transfer to the operating room, medical stabilization, and definitive repair with innovative procedures involving surgery, stents, and transcatheter valves.

When treating patients with type A dissection with surgery, it is important to remove all disease tissue from the aortic root. This may necessitate rebuilding the coronary arteries, replacing the valve and/or completely rebuilding the aortic arch.  Sometimes it is necessary to stop the circulation to the body in order to accomplish this reconstruction; a process known as circulatory arrest.. It is important to involve an aortic specialist, when feasible, to insure that the appropriate operation is performed.
