Dr. De Vizio of Colgate answered:Canker sores usually heal naturally over a period of one to two weeks. Some products may improve the time they take to heal, but there is little research supporting this. If you have a canker sore that does not go away in two weeks, see your doctor or dentist, who can prescribe medicine that can help treat the pain.
Here are some strategies some people have tried to get rid of canker sores more quickly and reduce the pain:
*Carbamide peroxide, a mixture of both peroxide and glycerin, is thought to clean out the sore and coat it.
*Products that contain benzocaine, menthol, and eucalyptol can decrease pain and might quicken healing.
*Homemade mouthwashes of hydrogen peroxide, salt, and baking soda have been used with mixed results. Do not swallow.
*Dabbing water, hydrogen peroxide, and milk of magnesia directly on the canker sore may help.
*Applying a wet bag of black tea containing tannin might help.Canker sores usually heal naturally over a period of one to two weeks. Ellen Whitehurst answered:Canker sores are caused by both constant stress as well as a potential deficiency in niacin. You can go to my Yoga Nidra posts on my blog this week for a quick and easy way to start to diffuse stress and try taking 50 - 100 mg of niacin daily to see if that helps. You shouldn't be alarmed though if you feel a sort of 'flush' after taking that supplement although you usually don't get that reaction unless you are taking higher dosages. A daily dose could speed healing and possibly prevent future outbreaks. Of course because it IS me, I have to recommend dabbing pure cold pressed castor oil on the sore all throughout the day as this will help to relieve discomfort and heal the sore as well. Another Old Wives Tale that I know has worked for my clients is to pit a big wad of blackstrap molasses on the canker sore. You should keep it there until it disappears and then rinse your mouth with water. You can lactobacillus acidophilus but must make absolutely sure that the supplements contain LIVE cultures and, if you don't have ANY of this but plan on getting some but the pain comes back you can go ahead and put a green or black teabag over the sore after it's been boiled and cooled. Squeeze the water out of the bag and leave on the sore for a few minutes. This should offer some temporary relief for discomfort. You should also look into different ways of balancing your pH/acid balance but let's take care of first things first and get rid of the reason you are suffering these sores in the first place. Hoping that helps and sending healing and love.
