Eye injuries are very common in swimming. For one thing, eyes can become easily irritated from the chlorine in the water. They can also become infected from the microorganisms in the water.
The best form of protection is to wear goggles during pool activity. In addition, if you wear soft contact lenses and they tend to stick to the cornea after you get out of the water, it's a good idea to wait 20 to 30 minutes after leaving the water before removing lenses to avoid damaging the surface of the cornea. Although soft contact lenses can protect the eyes from the chlorine in the water, it is recommended that contact lens wearers still wear goggles in the pool.
