If the person is conscious, able to swallow, and advises you that he or she needs sugar, give it in one of these forms:
- Several glucose tablets or glucose paste
- A 12-ounce serving of fruit juice, milk, or non-diet soft drink
- Table sugar dissolved in a glass of water
Most fruit juices and non-diet soft drinks have enough sugar to be effective.
Diabetics also may carry glucagon, which they can self-administer to counter hypoglycemia.
