There are benefits to storing foods the right way. In addition to preventing foodborne illness, you also can preserve quality and taste.

    Follow these five basic rules:
    • Set your refrigerator temperature below 40 degrees F and your freezer below 0 degrees F. Use a refrigerator thermometer to ensure temperatures.
    • Store leftovers in airtight, shallow containers (2 inches deep or less).
    • Refrigerate or freeze leftovers within two hours of cooking.
    • Use or freeze packaged items by the "sell-by" or "use-by" date.
    • Store canned goods in a cool area away from light.

When buying food for your barbeque, be sure to store it safely. For example, refrigerate perishables right away. Never allow meat, poultry, seafood, or produce to sit at room temperature for more than two hours. If the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, do not let foods sit outside for more than one hour. Also, be sure to maintain your appliances at the proper temperature. Keep your refrigerator temperature at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and keep your freezer temperature at zero degrees Fahrenheit. Buy an inexpensive thermometer and check it regularly. If you run into spoiled food or a food that smells strange, be sure to throw it away immediately.
