Swelling, bruising, and pain are common with this injury, but many people wait a few weeks before seeking attention in hopes that this will resolve. A large part of diagnosis, then, involves the history. People find that they have trouble shaking hands, holding a glass, turning keys and doorknobs, and writing if it is the dominant hand. This is because what makes the thumb a stable post is torn. Examination usually shows that the joint is not stable to stressing the thumb away from the hand. X-rays usually are taken to make sure that there is no fracture.
