How will I receive Reclast?

Reclast is given in an intravenous (IV) injection at a hospital or at your doctor's office. A needle is placed in your arm, and the medication is delivered through the needle into your bloodstream over a period of 15 minutes or more.

If you are a postmenopausal woman and Reclast is prescribed for osteoporosis prevention, you will receive Reclast once every two years. If Reclast is given for treatment of osteoporosis or to treat or prevent osteoporosis in people who are taking glucocorticoids, the injection will be given once a year. If it is prescribed for Paget's disease, it is usually given as a single dose. In some cases, more than one injection may be required over the course of the year, although this is unusual.

When preparing for your Reclast treatment, you will need to make sure you are hydrated. If you arrive for the injection dehydrated, you will be given fluids to hydrate you intravenously. After you receive Reclast, your doctor will most likely prescribe calcium and vitamin D supplements. These will be necessary to help your Reclast treatment strengthen and rebuild your bones. Your doctor will also help you prevent low blood calcium levels, a common side effect of Reclast.
